The Garnets
Density: 3.6 to 4.2 / Hardness: 6.5 – 7.5 / Varieties: Pyrope-dark red, Almandine-dark red, Grossular-all colours, Spassartites-orange red, Andratite-green to black, Ouvarovite-green
Garnets are always well crystallized in the form of dodecahedra, trapezohedra or combinations of dodecahedra – trapezohedra.
Transparent to opaque, brown to black, red, orange, green, vitreous to subadamantine luster.
They are found in pegmatites and metamorphic rocks.
Formerly called « Bohemian garnet » almandine used to imitate ruby.
